The name of our school is ST. AUGUSTINE’S NURSERY/PRIMARY & COLLEGE. It is named after St. Augustine of Hippo, North Africa, a North African Scholar, Bishop and Saint of very high repute. He was an Emeritus Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Milan, Italy in 384 A.D. before he later became an erudite Bishop of Hippo
St. Augustine’s Nursery/Primary Schools, No. 7, St. Augustine’s School Road, Idimu Titun was founded on the 21st of October 1991 and after gave birth to St. Augustine’s college on 20th of September 1999. The college began at the primary site with only JSS1, so that we could model the pioneer Augustinains from the outset without mixing them with student from other schools. On the first day, the students’ population was two and a month later the population jumped to twenty-three. Now the population is in units of hundreds.
The real names of St. Augustine of Hippo are Aurelius Augustinus (Augustine) Patricius (Patrick). His father’s name was Patrick ( Patricius) and his mother was St. Monica. He was a fair-skinned Berber-speaking North African who was born on 13th November in 354 A.D. at Tagaste, North Africa and died in Hippo, North Africa on 28th August 430 A.D. St. Augustine of Hippo, our role model of scholarship was a man of superlative knowledge, intelligence, eloquence, oratory and wisdom. He has been described by great scholars of all ages with superlative languages of praise. He is praised as one of the greatest philosophers from ancient times to date; the greatest theologian second to none after St. Paul; the greatest Doctor of the Church in Christendom; the Doctor of Grace; the greatest of the Fathers of the Church; a first-class orator (a first-class rhetorician); a first-class psychologist; etc. We want all the children who will pass through St. Augustine’s Schools to emulate the scholarly qualities of St. Augustine of Hippo and aim at achieving first-class records in their educational careers and in all their future endeavours and professions. After his primary education at his native town of Tagaste and later at the nearby town of Madaura, St. Augustine of Hippo studied rhetoric at the University of Carthage, North Africa. After his brilliant university education at Carthage, he travelled to Italy where he became a Professor of Rhetoric at the University of Milan, Italy in 384 A.D. Later his mother Monica joined him at Milan where St. Augustine was fully converted to the “True Religion” of the Catholic Church. He was baptised and returned to Africa where he became a brilliant Bishop of Hippo known all over the world from his time to date for his high scholarship beyond compare. So we expect all our pupils/students at St. Augustine’s Schools to reach the peak of their professions in the future by preparing them now to emulate St. Augustine of Hippo in their education.
Simply because all the pupils/students at St. Augustine’s Schools are modelled after the superlative knowledge, intelligence, eloquence, oratory and wisdom of St. Augustine, each member of St. Augustine’s Schools; present and past is called an AUGUSTINIAN. Whether they studied the sciences or the arts, they must aim to be Augustinians in their future professions: Augustinians in Medicine, Engineering, Literature, Accountancy, Literature, Economics, Religious Studies, Mathematics, Philosophy, Languages, Physical Sciences, Geology, or any trade or business.
To evolve a culture of excellence which will enable our students to be able to face challenges of life.
